Watch out ! Big format

The six performers of The Rat Pack had gathered around the love for gangster films, exploring the genre, before looking into the creative techniques of the cinema, which they diverted to reinvent their own circus performing acts. Just like a scenario for the big screen, they churned out a show using their own skills and interaction of the various members of the company. The set acts and circus disciplines now give way to the joyful  enterprise of an impressive team in constant swing. The Rat Pack consist of the boss of the mafia, his wife, a henchman, a pin-up girl, a barman and a bandit.  When they turn up on stage, the décor changes into a film set.

The outstanding talent of the performers shows in the body language that the ensemble have developed  through watching silent films and hip-hop dancing. The music score was composed by the DJ's themselves, and the Chinese Man band sound designer.

« Speakeasy » is their show - the word that was used for the Prohibition-era clandestine bars, selling illicit alcoholic beverages. It echoes of gangster films set in dismal places shut up from the open light, bleak atmospheres, dark smoky clubs and the like. Why « speakeasy »? Originally a place where speaking quietly was de rigueur not to alert the police, « Speakeasy » is now a theatrical experience involving The Rat Pack acrobats who, ironically enough, divert the various references and clichés of classic film noir. It features a mix of circus skills, dance, narrative theatre with a truly original soundtrack by the Chinese Man band, an eclectic show to be discovered just like a high energy action movie.

The Rat Pack company was founded, after much talking, in May 2014 by Peggy Donck and Xavier Lavabre.

« We were finalising our show « Il n'est pas encore minuit... » with the XY company. We were thinking of the different methods that we generally use for circus performance creations, and the ways they could be freshened up. When writing for circus performances we thought we could go much further if, right from the start, we mixed elements of choregraphy and music. To that end, we thought about an ideal cast involving outstanding performers in their own disciplines. Peggy Donck had once met an impressive pole performer, a circus acrobat who pushed the limits of everything that can be done -  technically speaking and who had a true sense of mobility. (Frankly, I didn't know who she was talking about until she said the person was Vincent Maggioni – incidentally my neighbour and childhood friend, and  the first person to introduce me to the circus arts).

It was obvious I had to set up that project with him, and ask him to support it because, back in 2011,  we had already worked on a circus act which did very well. We simply had to do it together. »
